The exhibition, opening on 24th September in the City Gallery in Wrocław, celebrates nearly ten years of the OK! art foundation’s activity. It brings together installations, objects, photographs, as well as paintings and drawings.
Founded in 2012 by Mariusz Mikołajek, Witold Liszkowski and Jan Mikołajek, the OK! Art Foundation operates in Wroclaw’s urban space and runs long-term creative projects that engage local communities. Its largest project involved regeneration and artistic arrangement of backyards on Roosevelta Street. Two huge murals were brought to life in Wrocław’s Nadodrze districtas a result of this activity – the “Backyard – Our Art Studio” and “Backyard – Discovering Art” murals. Since 2013, the Foundation has been running the Centre for Backyard Cultural Animation (OKAP), which provides artistic training in painting, drawing and ceramics, while a non-commercial OK! Art Gallery collaborating with OKAP opened in 2017. In 2018, the foundation received the Award of the Mayor of Wroclaw in recognition of its activity.
The exhibition organized by the City Gallery allows the audience to delve into the rich archival and photographic material documenting projects which the Foundation carried out over the years. The display includes autonomous works by the founders of OK! art: Witold Liszkowski, Mariusz Mikołajek, and Jan Mikołajek. The artworks were directly inspired by experience that the artists drew from working with local communities. Complementing the show will be pieces by amateur artists associated with the Foundation.
Jan Mikołajek explains the idea behind the exhibition in the following way: The exhibition at the City Gallery summarises the effects of our work to date. It’s an opportunity to reflect on its progress, but also on the direction it should take in the future. Besides, for us as well as the people who cooperate with us, it will be an important trace of what happened.
The exhibition will be opened until 23rd October 2021.
