Marian Bogusz/ 1920-1980 / 25.06.2021 - 29.07.2021

On 25 June the City Gallery in Wrocław will launch an exhibition featuring works on paper, paintings and photographic documentation of the set designs produced by Marian Bogusz. The works coming from different periods of the artist’s nearly 40-year-long artistic career shed light on the evolutionary processes that occurred in his art.

Marian Bogusz’s painting language developed for decades in line with the emergence of his artistic personality. In his search, the artist started from figurative art to gradually turn his attention to abstraction. Progressively, he synthesized and geometrized forms in order to simplify them into rhythmic grids of verticals, levels and slants, to eventually focus on exploring the painting potential of line. Throughout the entire period of his artistic activity, Bogusz experimented intensively with colour and matter and for some time remained under the strong influence of Art Informel. He has explored various techniques, such as fire painting (fumage) or assemblage compositions made using various materials. The artist also studied the painting surface and tested the possibilities of suede, velour or aluminium sheeting. The aesthetic diversity of Bogusz’s works, driven by his strong conviction that an artist must take innovative steps, was also reflected in his stage designs and spatial objects.

Despite the artist’s experimental bent, the ideas guiding his art remained unchanged. Throughout his life, Bogusz remained faithful to the concept of valuing the intellectual and emotional element of an artwork. He incessantly explored spatiality in painting. He also declared his conviction about the artist’s social role and mission to reach the widest possible audience with art and make it an obvious element of everyday life.

All these ideas resonated strongly in Bogusz’s organisational activity. Throughout his life, the artist was dynamically engaged in integrating the local cultural environment, in artistic education and promoting art in the public space. Polish history of art owes Bugusz many important initiatives, such as establishing the Club of Young Artists and Scientists (1947) and “Krzywe Koło” Gallery (1956), the organisation of the Koszalin International Plein-Air Workshop in Osieki (1963) and the Biennale of Spatial Forms in Elbląg (1965).

The exhibition “Marian Bogusz/ 1920-1980” organised in the City Gallery in Wrocław honours the enormous contribution of this extraordinary artist to the formation of avant-garde attitudes in 20th-century Polish art.

The exhibition will be open until 29 July.

The exhibition is curated by Mirosław Jasiński.

The works presented at the exhibition come from the collections of the Regional Museum in Pleszew and the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz.
