25 years after his individual exhibition debut at the City Gallery, Jerzy Kosałka is reopening his show in the premises of this Wroclavian establishment. The public can see the continuation of this double display in the artist’s studio (located at 46c/105 Ruska Street).
The retrospective exhibition entitled Whoever wants, let them believe, Kosałka Jerzy! has a double character. Its first part, housed in the City Gallery in Wrocław, focuses on intertextual games with the already canonical works of art. Using irony, grotesque and absurd, the artist readily dialogues with the most important representatives of modern art, frequently situating their works in uncommon contexts and expanding their narratives with new meanings.
The second part, opened in Jerzy Kosałka’s studio, is dedicated to productions with socio-political overtones (Whoever wants, let them believe / Post Politic). As in his art, this Wrocław artist often contests the ridiculous elements of Polish reality and consciously mythologises selected events from Polish history. However, while adopting an ironic and critical perspective, the artist refrains from a missionary or moralising tone.
The retrospective exhibition of Jerzy Kosałka, organised in the City Gallery more than a quarter of a century after his exhibition debut in the same institution, proves that the art by this Wrocław artist is invariably both novel and teeming with an extraordinary power to update itself along with the cultural, social and political changes occurring in the world. The show offers viewers the opportunity to revise their perception of this artist’s art, to see it in different contexts and to shift their focus to the pressing problems of today’s reality.
The City Gallery in Wrocław invites to the exhibition until 15 January 2022.
