Early in 1991 Teresa Kukuła wrote an interesting text in which she outlined a programme for an art gallery that was to function as a joint undertaking of the State High School of Fine Arts in Wrocław and the City of Wrocław. From organizational and financial point of view such formula would be difficult to implement for many reasons, thus Wrocław authorities decided to establish the gallery as a cultural city institution. The City Gallery in Wrocław was established under a resolution of Wrocław City Council of 10 July 1991, with Teresa Kukuła acting as the director of the newly created establishment.

At the beginning of September 1991 the City Gallery inaugurated its activity with a Show of Confectionery Products With Extended Expiry Dates by LUXUS art group from Wrocław. This display, which was an installation consisting of multiple objects, was prepared by six artists: Ewa Ciepielewska, Bożena Grzyb-Jarodzka, Małgorzata Plata, Jacek Jankowski, Paweł Jarodzki and Stanisław Sielicki. It was a major artistic event, as early 1990s was a very vibrant period for LUXUS when the group was actively involved in exhibiting. This exhibition, staged in the newly opened City Gallery, was a clear signal concerning the gallery’s programming profile. *

From 1991 to the end of 2012 the Gallery organized 322 artistic undertakings (exhibitions, festivals, artistic acts, diploma defences and lectures).

Mirosław Jasiński has been the director of the City Gallery in Wrocław since 2013.
