The City Gallery is hosting a group exhibition from 28 February to celebrate the 15th anniversary of “Art Park – Kliczków Castle”, an artistic retreat that has brought together 49 artists whose unique contributions have shaped its distinctive character.
The “Art Park – Kliczków Castle” residential art programme was first established in 2009 at the stunning Kliczków Castle estate near Bolesławiec, Lower Silesia. The retreat was founded through the collaborative efforts of Piotr Wieczorek, then head of the Wrocław District of ZPAP and the retreat’s organiser; Witold Liszkowski, who curated its first two editions; and Krystyna Szczepaniak, who has been the organiser and commissioner of the retreat and has produced its catalogues since 2011. This venture would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and generosity of Magdalena Piasecka-Ludwin and Jerzy Ludwin, owners of this remarkable 13th-century castle.
Since its inception, the retreat has welcomed over 90 artists and focused on bringing together the artistic community of Lower Silesia. Participants have included distinguished professors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, alongside talented independent artists from outside the Academy and graduates from Lower Silesian art schools, including emerging artists. Over its 15-year history, however, the initiative has expanded to attract artists from across Poland and other European countries, notably Germany and Spain.
While the retreat was originally designed for painters, it soon evolved beyond traditional painting – though this remains its foundation – to embrace diverse forms of artistic expression. As a result, the Wrocław exhibition showcases not only classical paintings but also features graphics, sculpture, ceramics, installations and mixed-media works.
Exhibition curator Mirosław Jasiński notes: This City Gallery exhibition offers a retrospective of selected participants’ work throughout the fifteen-year journey of “Art Park – Kliczków Castle”, as organisational and space constraints mean we cannot feature every artist. It serves particularly as a tribute to Magdalena Piasecka-Ludwin, whose dedication to and care over this project has been instrumental. The endurance of Art Park is remarkable, and we hope it continues to flourish for years to come.
The exhibition runs until 1 April 2025.
