On October 26th, Weronika Lucińska’s doctoral exhibition entitled Water. Element – Symbol – Matter will fill the spaces of the Wrocław City Gallery with ceramic-and-glass artworks. Yet, it is water that will be the most important complement to the display. Through her art, the artist explores this matter both through the prism of symbolic meanings and its physical properties.

Weronika Lucińska graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, she also pursued Interdepartmental Doctoral Studies at the same university. The pieces, currently presented within the walls of the City Gallery, are a summary of artist’s thoughts and experiences gained during her master’s and doctoral studies and have all been completed within the last two years. Through her creative practice, the author formulates a subjective statement about water as a symbol, element and matter. Lucińska reveals her deep fascination with this extraordinary liquid using its physical properties and broadly exploring the meaning layer of this matter.
The media and techniques used by the artist contribute meaningfully to showing unique features of water. Therefore, textured ceramic objects which Lucińska turns on a potter’s wheel and finishes by hand often take organic and liquid shapes. In turn, sculptural elements are frequently combined with glass, which resembles this extraordinary liquid through its transparency.
In her art, Lucińska continuously develops her craftsmanship and explores possibilities of the medium. As the artist emphasises: striving for perfection in the formal layer stimulates me to the constant search for new techniques and ways of constructing objects and installations. In my opinion, a precondition for achieving uniqueness of artworks lies in transcending boundaries of the material combined with innovation, while at the same time the use of the ceramic medium has to be justified.
At Water. Element – Symbol – Matter exhibition Lucińska presents monumental vascular forms, multi-element compositions made of ceramic and glass objects, as well as an artistic installation shown on the exhibition in the form of a video. Water is an inseparable component of each project – whether in its basic, i.e. liquid form, represented in the gaseous state as vapour or in its solid state as ice. Each works is a story about this extraordinary matter – its rich symbolism, specific physical properties, omnipresence in nature or dangers associated with it – always dressed in a very attractive visual form.
The exhibition is open until 30th of November.
