From 18 July, visitors to the City Gallery in Wrocław are invited to immerse themselves in the artistic universes of Maja Borowicz, Jarosław Jaśnikowski, Tomasz Kopera, Rafał Olbiński and Tomasz Sętowski – worlds that, while markedly different from one another, remain permeated by an atmosphere poised between dream and waking reality.
Constructed through the juxtaposition of opposites, the exhibition title “Real/Unreal” highlights two contrasting content-visual realms in which the featured artists operate. Using a visual language that mimetically reproduces forms taken directly from reality, the artists reassemble familiar forms into surreal juxtapositions, creating fantastical landscapes and staging improbable scenarios.
While the painting aesthetics of all the featured artists could be situated within the broad tradition of magical realism, their styles are far from uniform. Each artist draws upon an autonomous sphere of inspiration and references, with a distinct set of preferred formal devices and narrative techniques. In shaping their own painterly universes, they merge a wide array of visual tendencies. Beyond the poetics of dreams and the spirit of the uncanny, their work is also inspired by a fascination with fantasy literature, science fiction film, and digital culture. In doing so, the artists construct not only totally distinct imagined worlds, architectures, machines, objects and figures, but also venture into the realms of diverse – and at times radically contradicting – emotions and sensations.
“Real/Unreal” exhibition thus operates across a broad emotional and imaginative spectrum – allowing fairy-tale childlike wonder to coexist with a sombre, apocalyptic tone or even ostentatious eroticism.
The exhibition opening is held on 17 July (Thursday), at 6:00 PM.
The exhibition is on view until 14 August 2025.
The exhibition features works by Maja Borowicz, Jarosław Jaśnikowski, Tomasz Kopery, Rafał Olbiński from private collections and by Tomasz Sętowski.
