I sliced my head off

16.09.2016 - 30.09.2016

I sliced my head off / 16.09.2016 - 30.09.2016

„I sliced my head off” is a post-competitive exhibition of Marta Kubiak works, the laureate of Roland Gräfe Foundation Award, which in 2016 was guided to young artists from Wrocław.

Exhibition is already second, individual presentation of her work in the City Gallery, Wrocław. This time next to Kubiak’s typical serigraphy were also showed graphs made by less popular photopolymer technique. Artist become acquainted with this technique in USA, next she developed it during her stipend at Frans Masereel Centre in Kasterlee. Series of small sized work is the effect of her studies that is made into visual journal. It collapse into graphs, made by photographs manipulated and recreated into graphics. “Journal” is a transcript of days spent in Belgian village, it shows interest in everydayness. In hers art Kubiak is not trying to expose those categories. By affirmative attitude she shows only its being, admires the unaffectedness and ordinariness. Interest in those elements became to show in her first serigraphs – showing what is usually meaningless.

In newest exhibition artist primarily showed her works created during three months before exposition. There are also characteristic multicolor serigraphs, multiplied and made into whole series of similar portrayals like “Tongue with capers”, “Tongue’s block”, and also more individual ones “My heart broke”, “I came out of the sea” or “I sliced my head off”. Kubiak’s constructive actions are strongly subordinated to specific of the technique, which she uses. Small sized, black and white photopolymers are quite new to artists workshop, very simplified, operated by highly synthetized, geometrical forms. Serigraph on the other hand, with which Kubiak works since the begging, and which is perfectly mastered by her is more casual and impulsive.
In hers art Kubiak makes not only important changes in graphics, but also she comes back to the begging of less important and intimate things, developing Susan’s Sontag idea “Everything that happens to me is something I think about”.
