Marek Sobczyk: 2015-2019 [Longer Life of Every Picture] [Android] / 21.06.2019 - 13.07.2019

From 21 June, Marek Sobczyk’s individual exhibition: 2015-2019 [A Longer Life of Every Picture] [Android] will be on show in City Gallery in Wrocław. It showcases nearly 40 paintings from such painting cycles as “Around the word ‘atheism’”, “‘Museum’ in quotation marks”, “Table What? Who? – With What? With Whom?” and “The Year of Sculpture”. The show concludes four years of artistic work of this Warsaw artist.

Atheism is one of prevailing themes in Marek Sobczyk’s painting. The author, however, distances himself from issuing clear-cut opinions and judgments on the subject. Looking at violence present within several largest religious systems the artist seeks for reasons for departing from faith and why our contemporaries give up various manifestations of transcendence. In this context, “Around the word ‘atheism’” series appears as a project with no end, since the author circles around the essence yet simultaneously deliberately never reaches it.

The title of the exhibition organized in Wrocław City Gallery refers to what is animated and reasoning in the picture. Sobczyk associated the four-year time distance between his oldest and newest pieces with the lifespan of androids from “Blade Runner” – a 1982 film by Ridley Scott. They were programmed to last exactly four years. In the film the dying robots fought to extend their existence at least a tiny bit. Thus, pointing to the aspect of vivacity present in his artworks, the artist refers to what is “andro-(man)-like” in them.

“Marek Sobczyk: 2015-2019 [Longer Life of Every Picture] [Android]” exhibitions lasts until 13th of June 2019. The show is curated by Mirosław Jasiński.
