Katarzyna Józefowicz / between the Lines

26.07.2019 - 24.08.2019

Katarzyna Józefowicz / between the Lines / 26.07.2019 - 24.08.2019

City Gallery in Wrocław in collaboration with Culture and Art Centre in Wrocław and Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art invite for the next edition of Katarzyna Józefowicz’s exhibition titled “Between the Lines”.

The name of the show perfectly reflects its character, as in artworks presented at the display Józefowicz uses words, both those handwritten and those entering our homely spaces as newspaper articles. The title is also an adequate way to define the creative output of this Gdańsk artist as a whole – art that takes place quietly, privately, between the lines really. Thus, the most relevant word for describing Katarzyna Józefowicz’s art is probably “quiet”. Repetitiveness and banality of the elements make us perceive her artworks as something familiar and tamed on the one hand, while on the other – as something disquiet. This teeter on the brink of calm/disquiet strongly resonates as we examine the artist’s pieces.

Katarzyna Józefowicz calls herself a slave to building. Once we take a closer look at her complex constructions of multiple elements composed of small paper and newspaper clippings, this definition seems very adequate. In her installations, Józefowicz uses paper, an exceptionally brittle and precarious material susceptible to damage and changing with the passage of time. As the process of making these cobwebs, tablecloths and rugs woven out of single words is extremely arduous and time consuming, it brings to mind stereotypically feminine tasks on the one hand, while on the other hand – mandala creation. Through her artwork Katarzyna Józefowicz asks about universal themes: emotions, disappearance, relations with our surroundings.

The exhibition at the Wrocław City Gallery is the fourth exhibition in the “Between the Lines” series, right after the show held at ŁAŹNIA Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk, BWA Gallery in Tarnów and the Centre for Polish Sculpture in Orońsko. Its focal point is an installation of the same title. It was created from noise generated by words littering our everyday life originating from advertising slogans, from fragments of overheard conversations and read books.

The exhibition is curated by Agnieszka Kulazińska.
