The Crazy Nineties

26.02.2026 - 26.03.2026

The Crazy Nineties / 26.02.2026 - 26.03.2026

From 26th February, the City Gallery invites visitors to two solo exhibitions – Spatial Structures by Alojzy Gryt and Monument-Mementoes by Piotr Wieczorek – shown together under the banner The Crazy Nineties. Despite what it might suggest, the title does not refer to the decade of more than a quarter of a century ago, but rather to the venerable age of both artists who, now in their nineties, remain at the height of their creative powers.

The presented works by Alojzy Gryt, one of Poland’s most distinguished sculptors and installation artists, develop themes that have been present in his practice for decades. His art may be succinctly characterised by modularity, exploring the transparency of his objects and the relationship between his works and their surroundings, the use of unconventional materials and a subtle sense of humour. Above all, however, he is interested in structures in which order is disturbed by chaos and arrhythmia. Rejecting the notion of sculpture as monument, Gryt reveals its transcendent dimension to the viewer. As Marek Śnieciński observes: His works are singular acts of existence and presence, endowed with a distinct subjective identity. Viewers are drawn into their transparency, into their unsecrecy, and after a while, they begin to experience the enigmatic spirituality inherent in them.

Meanwhile, the works by Piotr Wieczorek shown in Monument-Mementoes, created on a miniature scale and brimming with humour of surrealist–dadaist provenance, continue an idea he has pursued for more than a decade. These witty, polemical collages often refer to specific individuals, situations, or ideas and concepts circulating within the cultural sphere. In fact, they embody the synthesis of Wieczorek’s entire output as a set designer, ceramicist, sculptor, and painter over nearly seventy years.

Mirosław Jasiński, the exhibition curator, describes the idea of bringing together Alojzy Gryt’s and Piotr Wieczorek’s works into the City Gallery in Wrocław as follows: Mirosław Jasiński, the exhibition curator, describes the idea of bringing together Alojzy Gryt’s and Piotr Wieczorek’s works at the City Gallery in Wrocław as follows: […] in assembling the works of both artists, we encounter art that is essentially anarchic, open to the ambiguity of the world and concepts, and analytical, transcendence-seeking installations. In both cases, these are outstanding and highly individual creative paths whose significance extends far beyond the borders of Poland.

The opening will take place on 26 February (Thursday), at 6.00 pm.

The exhibition runs until 26 March 2026.
