Starting on 18th May the City Gallery spaces will fill with painting and graphic art by five artists who took digitalisation and digital imaging as their inspiration and a starting point for their formal and thematic explorations.

The httpaintings:// exhibition features pieces by Kamil Kocurek, Piotr Kossakowski, Katarzyna Rutkowska, Mariusz Wildeman and Jerzy Zajączkowski.

The five artists create art that is formally diverse because it derives from different conventions of representation – both figurative and abstract. Their common denominator, however, is that they all draw on the aesthetics associated with various digital imaging strategies. Katarzyna Rutkowska and Piotr Kossakowski focus on visual elements emerged as a result of glitches, i.e. computer errors manifested by shifts, repetitions and colour modifications created within a digitally recorded image. Jerzy Zajączkowski works on pixels being the smallest uniform components of the image displayed on the monitor, while Mariusz Wildeman and Kamil Kocurek deal with current and outdated computer visualization techniques. They all transfer their ideas directly onto the flat surface of the canvas or paper and process them according to their own painting vision.

The exhibition organised at Wrocław City Gallery strives to define the relationship between art and technology and find an answer to the question about the topicality and place of traditional artistic media in the era of universal digitisation. The show, however, focuses also on more general issues related to the role and meaning of technology in our everyday life. Las but not least, it proposes a reflection on the human condition in the contemporary technicalised reality.
