From 24 January to 29 February the interior of the Wrocław City Gallery will be filled with artworks by Elżbieta Woźniewska. These are symbols encrypted in colourful signs, which leave plenty of room for interpretative wildness to their viewers.
PARALLES/ Elżbieta Woźniewska exhibition includes over a hundred pieces – paintings, art books and objects. The paintings were made using an original author’s technique that combines white marble (or quartz) sand with paint (oil, later on changed to acrylic). Both these components blend perfectly and create a hard and rigid surface which – once it gets dry – “deceives” viewers as they move away from the artwork and endows it with an impression of softness.
The PARALLES exhibition in Wrocław will feature artworks presenting mainly cryptograms (hidden signs) inspired among others by hieroglyphs. The pieces from this series make up a pictographic dictionary which enables the viewers to learn the meaning of individual signs. Each figure has been given its own name (such as “Care”, “Whispers” and “Gentleness”), related to an encoded emotion or thought. Owing to their structure, Wozniewska’s multi-element compositions can be taken apart into smaller pieces, and hence transformed into varied stories. The artist’s cryptogram compositions are site-specific, thus all her exhibitions are unique and special in their own way.
At the Wrocław City Gallery, the visitors will also get the opportunity to see Elżbieta Woźniewska’s artworks which relate to her personal experiences, as well as projects referring to important global events, including the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 2001.
Important highlights of the show include artworks inspired by the artist’s deep faith. When creating pieces such as “Roman Triptych”, “Presence”, “Jerusalem Wall” or “Pietà I and II”, Woźniewska gave up using cryptographic signs in favour of figural, realistic art. That was the only way in which she could capture the humanity, deep spirituality and emotions emanating from Mother of God’s focused face.
In the artist’s rich artistic output, unique art books also occupy an important and award-winning place. They represent her completely separate face and are devoid of cryptograms. After moving from Poland to Germany (Berlin), the artist focused on mythology in its broadest sense. Graphic and painting creations produced at that time proved to be an excellent source of inspiration for the designed books.
The PARALELS/ Elżbieta Woźniewska display is not only about cryptograms rich in various associations, it also includes highly realistic and abstract compositions. The presented artworks open a wide field for interpretative wildness without obviating ambiguity or getting lost in conjecture.
The official opening of the exhibition will take place on 23 January (Thursday) at 6:00 PM. The event will be accompanied by a concert.
