From 8 March the spaces of Wroc\u0142aw City Gallery will fill up with painting inspired by architecture. Sadness of Modernism: Oppression and Depression exhibition is a display of 16 Polish young generation artists, for whom modernism is a starting point for both thematic and formal artistic research.<\/strong>

The official opening of the exhibition takes place on 7th March (Thursday) at 6:00 PM and is accompanied by an electronic music concert performed by ZAJWERT (Pawe\u0142 Krzaczkowski).

According to idealistic visions of modernist architects the new style was to completely transform the 19th century social structures (by that time already anachronistic) and eliminate all their injustices. These expectations, however, turned out to be groundless. It was criticised for ignoring the needs of an individual or arbitrarily creating a new social order by imposing new needs, preferences and behaviour patterns on people. In consequence, modernism turned into a peculiar symbol of oppression and depression, while simultaneously triggering in people negative, sometimes even aggressive emotions directed against this type of architecture.

Thus, the Wroc\u0142aw exhibition is to give young Polish painters an opportunity to explore contemporary meanings of modernism and illustrate how our thinking about it has evolved over the decades.
The first theme explored at the exhibition is oppressiveness of individuals towards architecture – oppressiveness falling within both sudden destruction processes and natural degradation processes (i.e. also connected with a disrespectful attitude towards the protection of architectural structures). The display examines human destructive inclinations towards architecture also in a purely painterly context by presenting paintings that break down geometry of solids and density of urban tissue.

The second motif examined at the show is oppressiveness of architecture towards individuals. Exhibited paintings not only take up the topic of control over society and interference in individual autonomy through architecture, but also extensively draw on repetitiveness of simple, geometric forms characteristic of modernism. When vieved from the perspective of how an individual functions in the urban landscape this repetitiveness can be identified with feelings of a specific apathy, passivity, hopelessness, melancholy or depression.

W idealistycznych wizjach modernistycznych architekt\u00f3w nowy styl mia\u0142 doprowadzi\u0107 do ca\u0142kowitego przeformowania XIX-wiecznych, anachronicznych ju\u017c w\u00f3wczas struktur spo\u0142ecznych oraz zniwelowania wszystkich ich niesprawiedliwo\u015bci. Oczekiwania te okaza\u0142y si\u0119 jednak bezzasadne. Krytykowany mi\u0119dzy innymi ze wzgl\u0119du na ignorowanie potrzeb jednostki czy arbitralne kreowanie nowego \u0142adu spo\u0142ecznego poprzez narzucanie ludziom nowych potrzeb, upodoba\u0144, sposob\u00f3w zachowania modernizm w\u00a0konsekwencji przekszta\u0142ci\u0142 si\u0119 w\u00a0swoisty symbol opresji i\u00a0depresji, wyzwalaj\u0105c jednocze\u015bnie negatywne, niekiedy agresywne wr\u0119cz emocje jednostki skierowane przeciwko tego typu architekturze. Celem wroc\u0142awskiej wystawy jest wi\u0119c eksploracja za po\u015brednictwem m\u0142odego, polskiego malarstwa wsp\u00f3\u0142czesnych znacze\u0144 modernizmu oraz zobrazowanie tego, w\u00a0jaki spos\u00f3b na przestrzeni dziesi\u0119cioleci ewoluowa\u0142o nasze my\u015blenie o\u00a0nim.

Pierwszym z\u00a0poruszanych na ekspozycji w\u0105tk\u00f3w jest opresyjno\u015b\u0107 jednostki wobec architektury \u2013 opresyjno\u015b\u0107 mieszcz\u0105ca si\u0119 zar\u00f3wno w\u00a0ramach nag\u0142ych proces\u00f3w destrukcji, jak i\u00a0naturalnych proces\u00f3w degradacji (a wi\u0119c zwi\u0105zanych r\u00f3wnie\u017c z\u00a0lekcewa\u017c\u0105c\u0105 postaw\u0105 wobec ochrony obiekt\u00f3w architektonicznych). Pokaz bada niszczycielskie sk\u0142onno\u015bci cz\u0142owieka wobec architektury r\u00f3wnie\u017c w\u00a0kontek\u015bcie czysto malarskim, poprzez prezentacje obraz\u00f3w rozbijaj\u0105cych geometri\u0119 bry\u0142 i\u00a0g\u0119sto\u015b\u0107 tkanki miejskiej.

Drugim eksplorowanym na pokazie motywem jest natomiast opresyjno\u015b\u0107 architektury wobec cz\u0142owieka. Prezentowane prace nie tylko podejmuj\u0105 bowiem w\u0105tek kontroli spo\u0142ecze\u0144stwa oraz ingerencji w\u00a0autonomi\u0119 jednostki za po\u015brednictwem architektury, ale i\u00a0w ogromnym stopniu czerpi\u0105 z\u00a0charakterystycznej dla modernizmu powtarzalno\u015bci prostych, geometrycznych form, kt\u00f3ra, w\u00a0prze\u0142o\u017ceniu na problem funkcjonowania jednostki w\u00a0pejza\u017cu miejskim, uto\u017csamia\u0107 mo\u017ce odczucia swoistej apatii, bierno\u015bci, beznadziei, melancholii czy depresji.
